Surgery is always a risky proposition. No surgeon, no matter how skilled, can guarantee a positive result from a surgery. However, when a patient suffers an adverse result from surgery, careful investigation may be warranted to determine whether there is a reasonable basis for a medical malpractice lawsuit. This can include:
Anesthesia errors and accidents
Improper positioning of the patient on the surgical table;
Failure to identify structures within the surgical field;
Failure to exercise proper sterile technique;
Failure obtain informed consent;
Operating on the wrong patient or on the wrong surgical site;
Inadequate post-surgery and post-anesthesia care; and
Failure to monitor for post-operative infection and complications.
