Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas which is a nature by-product of the combustion of fuels. Carbon monoxide is dangerous to humans because it does not allow oxygen molecules to bind normally to the blood, resulting in a loss of oxygen to vital tissues and organs. People can be exposed to low levels of carbon monoxide for short periods of time without an adverse effects, but when people are exposed to carbon monoxide in high concentrations for long periods of time, serious injuries including brain damage and possibly death can result.
Lawsuits resulting from carbon monoxide poisoning can result from a number of ways:
The improper installation, maintenance, venting, or repair of a carbon monoxide emitting home appliance such as a furnace or stove;
The failure of a landlord to provide carbon monoxide detectors;
The failure of a manufacturer of a carbon monoxide emitting machine to warn users to have adequate ventilation while using the machine.
